A University of Iowa researcher wants you to visualize a plate of spaghetti when you think of the northern lights. Jack Scudder, UI professor of physics and astronomy, and his colleagues have reached a milestone in describing how the northern lights work by way of a process called "magnetic reconnection." The details are contained in a paper published in the June 5 issue of the journal Physical Review Letters; however, the process is best imagined as untangling twisted strands of spaghetti.

An artist's impression of the magnetic fields of Venus, Earth and Mars interacting with charged particles streaming from the sun. Earth's magnetic field protects it from these atmosphere-stripping particles.

Could severe solar storms, which affect Earth’s magnetic fields, be confusing marine mammals' internal compasses and causing them to lose their way and become stranded on the beach?

An interesting model of our solar system’s path as it travels through space in the Milky Way. Certainly a departure from usual models that show the Sun as a static object, which it certainly isn’t.

Earth's magnetic field, which protects the planet from harmful blasts of solar radiation, is much older than scientists had previously thought. This invisible, protective shield likely existed shortly after the planet formed; a finding that could shed light on why Earth is habitable and Mars is not. Earth's magnetic field helped make life on the planet possible. Without our magnetic field, solar winds would strip away the planet's atmosphere and oceans.
