When the tanks came in and the country was liberated, United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration trucks followed. Hepburn said in an interview that she ate an entire can of condensed milk and then got sick from one of her first relief meals because she put too much sugar in her oatmeal. This experience is what led her to become involved in UNICEF late in life.

After her retirement from film, Hepburn made valiant efforts with UNICEF, using her celebrity platform to raise awareness in addition to first-hand fieldwork. Her devotion to human rights was as important a career as her time in film.

“I can testify to what UNICEF means to children, because I was among those who received food and medical relief right after World War II,” said actress Audrey Hepburn on her appointment as a Goodwill Ambassador in 1989. “I have a long-lasting gratitude and trust for what UNICEF does.” As a result of her work for UNICEF over subsequent years, that gratitude is mutual.

"I'm glad I've got a name, because I'm using it for what it's worth. It's like a bonus that my career has given me," Audrey said later. "My first big mission for UNICEF in Ethiopia was just to attract attention, before it was too late, to conditions which threatened the whole country. My role was to inform the world, to make sure that the people of Ethiopia were not forgotten." Ethopia was Hepburn's first field assignment. It is amongst the poorest countries in the world.

Audrey Hepburn defined feminine glamour and dignity, and was later voted as most beautiful women of the twentieth century. After her acting career ended in the mid she devoted the remaining period of her life to humanitarian work with UNICEF.
