On the north end of the Isle of Skye the landscape is a mix of softer material and hard volcanic rock. The softer land is slipping away from the rock over time, leaving exposed peaks which in this image are just reaching up into the low cloud and mist.
More Scottish Rock
The change in landscape across Skye was huge as we drove around exploring. Each area interesting in its own way. Here's one little chunk from the north of the island and its cool rock formations as the clouds rolled in across the peaks. #TreyRatcliff #Scotland #Skye #LandscapePhotography
A view from a quadcopter above the coast of the Isle of Skye. The shallow sea water in the foreground is a mix of blues and greens which splash against hard, granite type rock which quickly slopes to the height of several buildings. Across the ridge is a freshwater loch, banked by large mountains on most sides to create a cauldron like landscape. These are dark rock, jagged, which reach up so that the peaks are shrouded in a set of moody looking clouds, a contrast with the sunny foreground. Loch Cauldron
Just over the ridge here, from the sea loch, Loch na Cuilce, is the freshwater Loch Coruisk… translated that means “Cauldron of Water”. A fitting name indeed. It’s fairly inaccessible by foot, do-able for the experienced walker/climber if you fancy a rather questionable section called “the bad step” although that’s not recommended in the wet… which is most of the time in Scotland! 😀 So, the only real way to get there is by boat, which Stu and I did. #TreyRatcliff #Skye #Landscape #LochCoruisk
A view from the air of The Trossachs, a mountainous area in central Scotland. Just south of The Highlands. It quite a cloudy day however they are high clouds, adding texture to the image rather than reducing visibility. In this image the hills are covered in lush green foliage. There are three lochs surrounding a central hill and in the far distance some of the larger peaks of the Scottish landscape can be seen. The Trossachs
Scottish place names… gotta love them. This is part of The Trossachs… feels lovely on the tongue. As does one of the more distant places in this image; Stronachlachar. Lovely sound and feel, like a good Klingon opera… #TreyRatcliff #Scotland #Trossachs #Loch #Landscape
A different view of Eilean Donan castle from the one I shared a few weeks ago. I liked that alternate view, looking back down the glen towards the mountains, rather than out towards the sea as seen here but this one does have a typically Scottish weather feel to it... which was good because the first chunk of my trip was abnormally sunny with clear blue skies a lot of the time. Nice to get some contrasts. #TreyRatcliff #Scotland #Landscape #Castle Scotland Landscape, Eilean Donan, Clear Blue Sky, Blue Skies, Antarctica, Glen, Chunk, The Mountain

An image of the mountain range in Glencoe, Scotland which is called the Three Sisters. They are tree distinct peaks which form a large rock formation at the end of the glen. A path runs along the base and they are for the first half, quite green in the summer. As you get higher this changes to harsh, dark rock. The image has a texture applied to it which adds extra drama to the scene, especially the clouds. Glencoe Scotland, Monty Python, Peril, Three Sisters, Bridge, Death, Landscape, Texture
The Three Sisters of Glencoe
These are known as the Three Sisters in Glencoe, Scotland. Some very imposing peaks… however, for me, the coolest thing about this place is that just off to the left were the Bridge of Death and Gorge of Eternal Peril from Monty Python and the Holy Grail! How awesome! #TreyRatcliff #Scotland #Glencoe #Landscape #Texture
"For rarely human eye has known
A scene so stern as that dread lake,
With its dark ledge of barren stone.
Seems that primeval earthquake’s sway
Hath rent a strange and shattered way
Through the rude bosom of the hill,
And that each naked precipice,
Sable ravine, and dark abyss,
Tells of the outrage still."

Quite the review of Loch Coruisk from Sir Walter Scott in the 1870's. This image shows the sea entry to the Black Cuillin mountain range described in the poem. Travel Photography, Igneous, Greatest Adventure, Mountain Range, Pretty Cool, Daily Inspiration
The Black Cuillin
During our second day on Skye, Stu and I took a boat over to that remote freshwater loch which sits amongst the Black Cuillin. That's the igneous mountain range from this image. A great adventure in search of the mythical Kelpie with, as you can see, some epic clouds. On the return journey we were accompanied by dolphins which was pretty awesome. Then, to top it all off, there were multiple double rainbows on they way towards our next destination! #TreyRatcliff #Scotland #Skye #Landscape #Isle
The viewer is standing at the edge of the river Sligachan on Skye, slightly elevated in the landscape. Looking down the river is quite low in water levels, revealing a rocky bed. Crossing in the middle of the frame is an old, possibly ancient bridge made of stone with 3 arches underneath the single track surface. In the background the lush green land rises quickly to the jagged peaks of the Cuillin Hills. They are slightly in shadow, just touching the moody, textured clouds above. Sligachan Bridge, Skye
When I first arrived in Scotland it was the middle of a pretty long heatwave. Probably 75% of my trip was like that, clear blue skies, warm. All very nice, but I was quite pleased when the weather started to change later in the trip, around the time I was heading to Skye, creating a much more moody atmosphere. #TreyRatcliff #Skye #IsleOfSkye #Cuillin #Landscape #Scotland #moody
Large rock columns extend from the North Sea coast of Scotland. The rock is somewhat red in colour, contrasting with the deep blue of the water. Cool Rocks, Rock Formations

Eilean Donan castle as viewed from the west. It is an ancient castle on a tidal island in a Scottish loch (lake). In the background the mountains are a lush green as it is summer, the sky significantly cloudy on this moody day. Scottish Castles, Bond Movies, Small Cars, Car Park, The Other Side
It's THAT Castle
When people think of Scottish castles, Eilean Donan Castle is probably up there in the top 5.It’s made appearances in the likes Bond movies, calendars and the like. Anyway. On the drive to Skye you pass this place and the obvious thing to do is pull into the car park right next to the castle BUT if you continue on about 2minutes you’ll end up at a smaller car park on the other side with a more interesting view of the mountains in the background. #TreyRatcliff #Scotland #EileanDonan #Castle
In the late summer evening there is still a little light in the cloudy sky over Edinburgh. Below the streets are lit by a warm yellow glow which contrasts with the pale blue sky and dark stone buildings. The main subject, on the opposite side of the road is St Giles cathedral, a 14th Century building which dominates the scene. It has gothic style design with a spire which rises almost 50meters into the sky. 14th Century, Summer Evening, Late Summer, Old Town, Edinburgh
Old Town Evening
Exploring the Old Town area of Edinburgh in the late summer evening. I had a bunch of fun wandering around here, a lot of the time recording vlogs with my 360 camera, for release soon. That building you see over on the left is St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile. It's from the 14th Century or something around that time... old town indeed! #TreyRatcliff #Edinburgh #OldTown #Architecture #RoyalMile
Viewed from a quadcopter, the ruin of Kilchurn Castle sits on a grassy peninsula on Loch Awe. Behind it rise some small mountains, also green like the grass around the castle. The sky is blue with numerous fluffy white clouds. Awe, Castles
Kilchurn Castle
Kilchurn Castle on Loch Awe. The temptation with castles is to get up close with them, make an imposing image of it. You can see here that there is a path where people walk out to the castle to explore and create such an image but in this case it was definitely better to get a bit further back and capture it in the stunning landscape. #TreyRatcliff #Scotland #Castle #Ruin

A view from a quadcopter of the bay at Scourie on the north west coast of Scotland. The bay is curved with white sand shore. In the shallow water the white sand has turned the water turquoise, morphing into deep blues as it deepens. In the distance large rocky hills rise and dotted around are houses and a small village. It is a sunny day with the sky filled by white fluffy clouds. North Coast, Idyllic, Wonderful Places, Cityscape
Idyllic Scotland
Another perfect little bay while exploring the north of Scotland. There were so many of these idyllic locations along the way. I guess it's not quite as calming in the winter but on this day... a wonderful place to randomly find yourself. #Scotland #NorthCoast #Coast #Landscape #TreyRatcliff
The sun sets behind the main tower of Glasgow University. It is an old building with gothic style tower and is surrounded by the trees of Kelvingrove Park and the campus. The sky is glowing golden in the late summer evening light. Glasgow University, Evening Walk, Glasgow Scotland

A pile of six rocks of decreasing size are piled on top of a large boulder in a Scottish river. They appear to defy physics, somehim remaining still amongst the elements. Fairy Pools, Weather Day
Detail at the Fairy Pools
Here’s a little detail shot I grabbed when at the Fairy Pools on Skye. A lovely hike, even on a moody weather day! #TreyRatcliff #Scotland #Skye #FairyPools
