What Skinny Puppy looked like when they were just starting out in the early 80's. They are a Canadian group that is widely credited with founding the Electro Industrial form or dark and heavy music and their antics have only gotten more, shall we say, provocative. Siouxsie and the Banshees in their heyday. Along with Bass Guitarist Steven Severin, Siouxsie formed her band in 1976, quite awhile ago, and is credited as being one of the original Goth bands and gals, with th ebig hair, attitude, make-up and anti-mainstream views that many youth cultures then and even now latch onto. Originally part of the Punk scene, the band quickly evolved into more rhythmic and sonically audacious tracks, fueling the alt-Goth category. They disbanded in 1996.
Southern Death Cult is credited with giving it's lead singer and part of it's name to the platinum award winning The Cult (which is considered a rock band as opposed to Goth). Ian Astbury disbanded the group in 1983 and still plays today as one of the longest serving members of the Cult.
One of the original Post-punk, Goth Rock bands, The Cure was formed in 1976 and they were quick to establish themselves as leaders of the Goth Rock movement with albums such as Seventeen Seconds in 1980, Faith in 1981 and Pornography in 1982. Frontman Robert Smith remains the only original member to this day. Hey, after almost 40 years, what can you expect, the Stones?
Nick Cave and The Birthday Party which expanded to four members in 1978, ran until 1983 when Cave formed Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, partly to move away from the Goth scene, hating the label, but being a magnet for Goth music fans in Europe, moving from Australia, the UK then Berlin.

Formed in 1976 and playing their first gig as a front-band for the recently formed Sex Pistols, they would go on to be one of the foundation to Goth Rock and were the first to release a single and tour the US as a Punk-rock band. Oh and of course, the lead singer is named Captain Sensible!
