Ermine // photo by Amy Gerber, 2012. The long-tailed weasel aka ermine is the most widely distributed mustelid in N America. They are found in open/semi-open habitats near water. Diets consist mainly of rodents. Adult males, 14-18", females generally smaller. They have brown fur that molts to pure white in the winter, though the tip of their tails stay black year round. Photo captured in the Pahaska area outside the East entrance to Yellowstone.

I never thought I would think of a weasel as "elegant". Ermine // photo by Amy Gerber, The long-tailed weasel aka ermine is the most widely distributed mustelid in N America.
