Its five hundred swatches, made by the Manchester mfg firm of Benjamin & John Bower, represent the type of inexpensive cloth worn by sailors, artisans & enslaved persons. Such textiles, especially the colorful checked & striped examples, were a valuable currency exchanged for enslaved Africans.  7 of 49 pgs.
