The son of an Austrian diplomat and an English aristocrat, Count Czernin Manfred Beckett enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1935. After participating in a Battle of France, he became an ace during the Battle of Britain. Attacking head on flying a Hurricane, he cut down three Messerschmitt Bf 110 in less than a minute August 25, 1940.
