The Marquesa Casati was an eccentric figure in the early 20 th century.  She wore daring clothes by avant garde designers like set designer Leon Baskt, painted her face dead white and ringed her eyes with kohl. In 1919 she left her noble husband for poet Gabriel d'Annunzio. Painter Augustus John told Cecil Beaton that she deserved to be stuffed and put in a glass case.  The present day fashion house Marchesa is named after her.
