Casey Fashion Plates Detail | Los Angeles Public Library

This fashion plate from 1864 is later than the period of my novel (1853-54), but the crisp, rather military braiding on the dress at the right helped inspired the style of Clare Hetton, my protagonist. From the beginning, I knew she was not a ruffly, flouncy woman, so the question arose: how would she dress of her time, yet in a way that expressed her real soul? Even though dresses are rarely described in the novel, it was important to me to pin this element of her identity down.
