The Chūmon or Middle Gate (中門) of the Danjo Garan (壇上伽藍) complex on Mount Kōya (高野山) in Wakayama-ken (和歌山県), Japan. The original construction of this gate dates back to the founding of Kōyasan. Originally there was a tori-shaped gate, intended to mark the sacred precincts. It was repeatedly destroyed by fire and was eventually rebuilt as a two-storied gate with five bays. During the Edo period it was destroyed by fire at least three times.
