The Lochnagar Crater in Somme, France is a privately owned crater made during World War I. It was purchased by Richard Dunning in 1978 with the aim of preserving the site.

My mother (5 years old) and her parents were booked from Liverpool for their return to New York after 8 months in Paris, in August of 1915 at the dawn of WWI. My grandfather was in the steel business and had been aiding in the war effort for France. My grandmother volunteered at The American Hospital of Paris, Wounded Soldiers Division. The Lusitania sank on May 7, 1915 after being torpedoed by a German U-boat.
