This image was taken of my grandmother in Shanghai at 16 years-old.  Before I left for China she aptly told me that Shanghai changes every two years.  It’s true—cranes jut out against the skyline and brand new buildings still shrouded in scaffolding & tarps stand proudly at just about every turn.  So, in search for my grandmother’s Shanghai I set out for Duolun Lu, a street officially protected to retain the look of the city in the 1920s and 30s.    Far from the Park Hyatt, I

Sam Sanzetti - whose real name was Semyon Liphshitz - was a Jewish photographer who arrived in Shanghai in 1922. He became one of the most famous photographers in Shanghai. After thirty years in Shanghai, he moved to Israel where he stayed until his death in 1986.
