Marshal Ferdinand Foch (1851-1929) The most impressive of the French commanders; considered a brilliantly aggressive general. Towards the end of the war he became the Supreme Allied Commander, the most aggressive and intelligent of the WWI commanders. Taught at the French War College that wars were won through superior morale and superior will; the 1914 and 1915 fighting led to his rejecting these ideas. He worked easily with other allied commanders.
