This corset and hoop skirt were commissioned by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts for display in the 2004-05 textile department exhibit "High Style and Hoop Skirts: Fashions of the 1850s". They are based on primary source research found in museums, private collections, and period advertisements. The drawers and shift are authentic garments from the MFA collection. Purple silk waistband with cream cotton lining, closed at the front with a brass metal hook and three eyes. 8 purple wool tapes suspending 12 steel hoops wrapped in purple wool. The hoops are attached to the straps with brass clamps. The hoops are closed in the front with two brass clamps that allow them to be adjusted in size. The two upper hoops are open at the front for entry. Amsterdam Museum.
