Shimaoka Tatsuzo (1919-2007) was a mingei potter who studied under Mingei founder Shōji Hamada, and later became the second Living National Treasure of the famous pottery town of Mashiko. Mashiko was badly affected by the 2011 earthquake, which caused damage to homes and kilns.
