Polish army captain Witold Pilecki  volunteered to enter Auschwitz in 1940  to gather intelligence and organize prisoners.  Pilecki let himself be captured in Warsaw and became inmate 4859. Over the next two years, Pilecki prepared the camp’s inmates for an uprising, distributed extra food, and even built a secret radio transmitter to communicate his findings. He escaped in 1943, but was arrested by Stalinist police in 1947 after being accused of spying.  He was executed soon after.

Witold Pilecki, a Polish soldier, volunteered to infiltrate the Auschwitz concentration camp as a prisoner and escaped with intelligence that convinced the allies that the Holocaust was taking place.
