This is the Japanese aircraft carrier Kaga, completed in 1928. She was lost at the battle of Midway in 1942.

In the early war, the German Kriegsmarine was split between surface raiders and U-boats. The Admiral Graf Spee was a Deutschland-class "pocket" Battleship that roamed the Atlantic in the first months of the war, sinking 9 merchants and avoiding British and French hunter groups. In December 1939, she was caught and engaged by HMS Exeter, Ajax, and Achilles. Having taken 70 hits and 90 casualties, the ship withdrew into harbour at Montevideo, Uruguay for repairs. Germany's goal was to split the Allied line in half, capture Antwerp and encircle and destroy four Allied armies, forcing the Western Allies to negotiate a peace treaty in the Axis Powers' favor. Once accomplished, Hitler could then fully concentrate on the eastern theatre of war. #WWII
