This mosaic image of Andromeda spiral galaxy -- showing explosive stars in its interior and cooler, dusty stars forming in its many rings -- combines observations from the Herschel Space Observatory taken in infrared light (the orange hues), and the XMM-Newton telescope captured in X-rays (the blues). Andromeda is our nearest large neighbor -- located about 2.5 million light-years away and holds nearly trillion stars. Our Milky Way galaxy contains about 200 - 400 billion stars.

~~Hubble Solves Mystery on Source of Supernova in Nearby Galaxy, Large Magellanic Cloud Galaxy by NASA Goddard Photo and Video~~

A pair of interacting galaxies called Arp 147 was captured by Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2. One of the galaxies (left-most galaxy shown) is relatively undisturbed, apart from a smooth ring of starlight. The other galaxy (right-most in image) exhibits a clumpy, blue ring of intense star formation.

This once-in-a-lifetime image shows a pair of gravitationally interacting galaxies called Arp The galaxy on the left, is relatively undisturbed, whereas the galaxy on the right, is a messy ring of intense star formation. Image: NASA/ ESA/ M.
