Ireland is, of course, a Celtic country but in terms of how long it has been populated, the Celts are relative newcomers. For more than 7,000 years the island was inhabited by people of the Stone Age. Very little is known about them although they did leave behind a few clues which has enabled historians and archaeologists to offer us a glimpse of who they were and how they lived.

On April 28, 1916, Thomas Ashe and a group of Irish Volunteers ambushed 40-man unit of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) in Ashbourne, Co. Meath. Eight policemen died and fifteen wounded. Ashe would eventually spend time in jail for his role and in 1917 he would be jailed again. He began a hunger strike on Sept. 20, demanding POW status and died after five days from injuries while being force-fed. (Ashe has a famous American cousin: actor Gregory Peck).
