In Japan, the night before the close relatives hold a very special ceremony called, ‘ Otsuya’, to say goodbye to the body. candles & intents are burned & relatives stay awake through the night, with the belief that the dead may wake up. Monks visit the deceased to pray & give a ‘Buddhist name’. The body is cremated. After the cremation each relative picks up a bone with chopsticks & places it in a white pottery jar. This shows that the body is not forgotten. (1/2)
