A lioness shows a young cub tenderness in the Ngorongoro crater which is seen in the background. The crater covers 264km and is one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas not filled with water. These lions have survived against all the odds after a flood in 1962 brought with it a biting fly that weakened the population and narrowed the genetic pool. However following huge conservation efforts from the Serengeti Lion Project working with the Maasai, the population seems to be recovering.
