A George III North Devon named and dated brown slip decorated earthenware jug

Potters in the West Country (Somerset, North Devon and even South Wales) disguised their brick-red clays with an entire coat of white slip, on which stylised floral decoration and inscriptions could be incised with a point or carved. Popular thems on the big harvest jugs were nautical compasses, hearts, tulips and birds.
