This Messerschmitt Bf 109E-1 piloted by Unteroffizier Arno Zimmermann was downed after a Brirish Hurricane fired a machine gun burst through the engine. The pilot headed back to the French coast, but the engine faltered badly, the cockpit filled with smoke, and he was obliged to make a forced landing on the beach gravel near the water tower at Lydd, Kent (October 27, 1940). It is seen being inspected by a Home Guard sentry. Zimmerman remained a POW for the duration of the war.
