Sun pillars, or light pillars, are shafts of light extending from the sun or other bright light source. They’re caused by ice crystals drifting in Earth’s air.

This raft spider (Dolomedes fimbriatus) was spotted at the RSPB's Arne reserve in Dorset. Raft spiders are semi-aquatic and are able to hunt prey while gliding on the water's surface. At the female is one of Britain's largest arachnids.

Large orb weavers, such as this labyrinth spider (Agelena labyrinthica), reach maturity in late summer so the biggest specimens can be seen at this time of year. The species earned its name from the labyrinth of tunnels it builds from funnel-shaped webs.

Autumn is the ideal time for spotting spiders and the RSPB announces some surprising spider facts in a bid to bring people closer to nature.

According to the Daily Mail U.K., a maritime engineer spotted a white humpback whale swimming amongst a pod of regular-hued humpbacks in the waters off Norway. This one is Migaloo and he is not albino, but leucistic, as are the other white humpbacks recently spotted. In fact, one of them is believed to be the offspring of Migaloo.
