Agh. We were going to stay here - the Criterion Hotel in Oamaru - on the main man's birthday during our trip down to the South Island. Just found out that it's gone out of business, and it's the main reason he wanted to go so we're not going to bother (it would have been a 200km trip). Gutted - I was looking forward to checking out the town.
Here's one of my own photos - made it to Badwater. 49 degrees celsius, and we walked about 200m before feeling headachy and nauseous (the water bottle we took felt like it had hot tea in it by then). So worth it though, dream fulfilled and a lifetime memory for us to share.
Flew into Sydney on my way back into Auckland and this was what I saw more or less except more rain. Never had an inkling to go there and this only confirmed that it's just a bigger version of Auckland.
Jeremiah O'Brien. One of the last fully operational US Warships. Great to go up on and get a view of San Fran - we even got offered beer by a salty old sea dog on the top deck, jaded from serving America's Cup pundits all day. Got some good photos of us on that front gun too.
Alcatraz, San Francisco, own photo. Unfortunately this is as close as we got - because of America's Cup, tours to the island were completely booked out the entire time. Fiancé was pretty gutted, I promised him we will go next time!
Mirabell Chalets, Airport Rd, Alexandra Central Otago. Would NOT recommend staying here if you don't have a vehicle as it is 3-4kms out of town (and Alex is cold at night when we went). Otherwise, awesome! No neighbours, beautiful cabins, gardens to walk around, and those chickens just wanna be your buddies (they'll try and get in if they can!) There's a hot tub outside too :)
