Madain Saleh, Saudi Arabia a site dating back to the 2nd C. BCE has long been hidden from foreign visitors in this ultra-conservative kingdom. But now the largest and best preserved site of the Nabataean civilisation south of Petra is the first Saudi archaeological site to be inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Dating back to the second century BC, the Nabataean archaeological site, also known as Madain Saleh, has long been hidden from foreign visitors in this ultra-conservative kingdom that rarely opens up to tourists.

Madain Saleh: situated in the north western area of Saudi Arabia, it was created by the Nabetians, who built the magnificent Petra in Jordan. The ancient and now uninhabited city is the best known and the most spectacular archaeological site in Saudi Arabia. During its prime, it was an important stop on the caravan routes from the incense-producing areas of southern Arabia to Syria, Egypt, Byzantium and other points.
