The Turkic peoples entered Anatolia after the Mongols defeated the Seljuks of eastern Anatolia in the middle of the thirteenth century. After a period of turmoil, the Ottomans secured dominance.
Vindolanda was one of the main military posts on the northern frontier of Britain before the building of Hadrian's Wall. Exacavations there in 1973 uncovered writing tablets that are the oldest surviving handwritten documents in Britain. The tablets are wafer thin slices of wood, written on with carbon ink and quill-type pens.

Oct. 1914. Ottomans closed the Dardanelles to Allied shipping, following an incident on 27 Sept. when the British Dardanelles squadron seized an Ottoman torpedo boat. The actual decision to close the strait was taken by German military advisors stationed in the Dardanelles without reference to the Ottoman government. 28 Oct. - Ottoman fleet, led by Yavûz Sultân Selîm, began raiding Russian assets in the Black Sea. Odessa and Sevastopol were bombarded, a minelayer and gunboat were sunk.
