Sada Abe portrait c. 1935. On December 21, 1936 Abe was convicted of murder in the second degree and mutilation of a corpse. Abe's sentence was commuted on November 10, 1940, on the occasion of the 2,600th anniversary celebrations of the mythical founding of Japan, when Emperor Jimmu came to the throne.
