Harriet Ross Tubman, 1911. In my opinion one the most interesting women in the world, past or present. Its difficult to summarize her bio in 500 characters. She was an adventurer, humanitarian, reformer, spy & hero. The links give an account of her life & accomplishments. I chose this image because it fits her other name, "Moses". http://www.math.buffalo.edu/~sww/0history/hwny-tubman.html, http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part4/4p1535.html, http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part4/4p1535.html.

JENNY SLEW, born circa 1719, to a free White woman and an Enslaved Black man. Jenny Slew had lived all her life as a free woman, but in 1762 she was kidnapped and enslaved by John Whipple. In 1766, Jenny took her case to the Essex Superior Court of Judicature in Salem, Massachusetts. She was freed. The judgment read that your status as a Slave was based on the status of your mother. Jenny's mother was white, so by law she was not a Slave. (photo: statue of female Slave 18th century.)

The Last Men of the Revolution: Photographs of Revolutionary War Soldiers. Cpt. George Fishley. He entered the Continental Army in 1777, the paper says, under Gen. Poor and Col. Dearborn. He served three years and, according to his own account, was among the men who marched near Valley Forge wearing no shoes or stockings.
