London B 226, Attic black figure neck amphora, c. 530-510 B.C.Hercules and the centaur Pholos shaking hands. Hercules visited his friend Pholus, who lived in a cave near Mount Erymanthus. He was hungry and thirsty, so the kindly centaur cooked him some meat in the fireplace, but when Hercules asked for wine, Pholus said that he was afraid to open the wine jar, because it belonged to all the centaurs in common. Hercules opened it himself.
