I saw these nautical carvings when I went to Provincetown, Cape Cod.  They were on the pier where you could get whale watching tickets.  The artist was pretty cool and offered to cut me a custom whale if I gave him a day or two.  He had an e-mail too but can't seem to find the postcard right now!  :(

When I first moved to our new town by the sea I immediately fell in love with the hand carved sperm whales and golden cods that appear above many of the front doors. I'm partial to the sperm whale .

Nautical Scrimshaw

We lived on Nantucket Island as mentioned later on this board. The history of scrimshaw was huge there. New Bedford also carries on the tradition.

The ship and sky are black and white while the ocean has a blue overlay. Or the photo was originally color and the ship and sky were layered black and white. It is a striking effect, though I might have upped the contrast on the ship.
