"Terra Brasilis" by Portuguese astronomer and cartographer Lopo Homem-Reinéis, is a map of Brazil as it was in a few years after the beginning of Portuguese colonization. This map is currently in the French National Library.
The map is part of an atlas known as the Queen Mary Atlas. Mary commissioned the atlas in 1558 from the Portuguese mapmaker Diego Homen. It was probably intended as a gift for Mary’s Catholic husband, King Philip II of Spain. Mary died before the atlas wa
