I photographed this young child with thanaka on his face in Bagan, Burma/Myanmar. Thanaka is a paste made from tree bark, and while often used as decoration, it also provides protection from sunburn. It is applied in patterns and designs.
Photo by @chien_chi_chang / @magnumphotos Bagan is the ancient capital of Burma and a sight to rival Cambodia's Angkor Wat. The area once held 13000 pagodas dating back to the second century A.D. many built of brick that was plastered and painted. Although earthquakes and the Ayeyarwady River destroyed more than 10000 of them many new pagodas continue to be built to date. #Bagan #Burma #Myanmar #pagoda by natgeo
