science is beauty: Composite image (X-ray & optical) of the Rosette nebula, located about light years from Earth. More shocking that the one I posted here two years ago. Source: Rosette Nebula: The Heart of a Rose (Chandra X-ray Center)
The colorful Eagle Nebula taken at the National Science Foundation's telescope on Kitt Peak. Located in the constellation of Serpens, the Serpent, the Eagle Nebula is a very luminous open cluster of stars surrounded by dust and gas.
Three newly-discovered streams arcing high over the Milky Way Galaxy are remnants of cannibalized galaxies and star clusters. The streams are between and light-years distant from Earth and extend over much of the Northern sky.
This image of the Orion Nebula was obtained from multiple exposures using VLT’s HAWK-I infrared camera. This is the deepest view ever of this region and reveals more very faint planetary-mass objects than expected. Image credit: H. Drass et al / ESO.
