June 6, 1942: The Battle of Midway begins with a predawn torpedo strike by U. S. Navy PBY Catalinas against Japanese ships, which damages an oiler. Eventually, all four Japanese carriers are destroyed. This loss causes the Japanese to cancel the Midway operation and withdraw.
