Raijin 雷神 Shinto God of Thunder holding a hammer to beat the drums that surround him. 13th century, wood, Sanjūsangendō in Kyoto. Japan - 風神・雷神像 ともにインド最古の聖典とされる「リグ・ヴェーダ」に登場する神で、その名が示すように自然現象を神格化した原初的な神々です。 風神は、ヴァーユと呼ばれ、数頭立ての馬車で天を駆けて悪神を追い払い、富貴栄達を授ける神とされ、一方の雷神は、ヴァルナという水神だといわれます。 仏教では、仏法を守る役目とともに、悪をこらしめ、善を勧めて風雨を調える神と信じられています。 その像形は、古代の信仰や伝説的空想によって、全く日本化されており、後世の二神のイメージを決定づけた名作で、お堂の再建時に造像を統括した湛慶が、その作成に深くかかわっているとされます。

The Thunder God Raijin (雷神) is one of the eldest Shinto Gods. By beating the drums he carried with him he created thunder. This sculpture can be found at Sanjūsangendō temple in Kyoto, Japan.

This and three other sculptures form a set of four guardian deities that has been long been kept in the Hall of Nine Amidas of Joruri-ji Temple. As these guardians are slightly too large for the hall, it is assumed that they were originally made for another hall.
