Portrait of St. Matthew. The Book of Kells is many things, but above all else it is a Latin text of the four gospels according to Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Consequently, the evangelists figure prominently throughout the book. Although individual portraits of St. Luke and St. Mark were either not completed or have been lost, there is no doubt that the intention was that each of the individual gospels would be prefaced by a portrait of the appropriate evangelist.
