That's one of my favorite lines from the Lorax and I loved getting all into it with my kids at home when reading the book to them. It also suits this first week back to school project pretty well too:) School started this week here at Zamo and we are getting back in the creative mindset. For the past 4 years I have done a collaborative art mini lesson with the upper grade students to give them a low stress opportunity to create and to go over my art room rules and expectations. I LOVE doing…

Writing goals

In Kindergarten, we spend the first half of the year teaching about the basic mechanics of storytelling and writing.... that our pictures and ideas can tell a story! Once we learn these basics, we start to hone our skills one skill at a time. We begin with correct capital usage, learn to use finger spaces, use sight words in our writing, about the different kinds of punctuation, and really practice stretching out our words. After all of these skills are taught and practiced, I assess who…

End of Year Gift: Each student had a sheet of paper with everyone's name on it. They had to write a nice sentence about everyone in the class. Then each student had 20 nice things written about him or her. We put those in a frame. This activity is great! Give each student a sheet of paper with every classmate's name on it. They had to write a nice sentence about everyone in the class. Then each student has 20+ nice things written about him or her. This activity was great because some of the students in my class don't hear about how great they are at home. Keep them in a frame to preserve them. The kids will love hearing about how great they are from classmates.

Classroom Management No more, "I don't know" responses! This is particularly annoying to me when students say "I don't know. I could use this by first teaching student about my expectations, and then using this as a reminder. More on Interactive Notebooks

I am going to post a few more pictures of my language arts interactive notebook that I took a couple of weeks ago. I have been posting a few with each blog, but am going to post several more of them on this entry. It has been what seems like a long week, so I am going to KISS this post! That is an acronym I teach my students: Keep It Short and Simple. We KISS a lot of stuff when appropriate! This is a double bubble map we used while reading The Cay by Theodore Taylor. This is a…

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo, 2008, made by the Buda Bee Quilters, Texas In 2004, Karen Stone published her most complex design, Cinco de Mayo. It's been one of my favorite patterns since I first saw it, and I've only known one or two people who dared to make it. Cathie Favret of the Tillamook County Quilters made one a few years ago. I wanted that quilt, but I don't think Cathie was going to let go of it easily. Can you blame her? It's a lot of work to make one of these quilts. Cathie Favret with the…

Van Gogh Chair - 3D

Here's Van Gogh's Chair to go with Van Gogh's Sunflower 3D lesson. Again, thanks Anne from Use Your Coloured Pencils for inspiring this idea with her Van Gogh Pop-Up Chair lesson. Each student was given one black paper and 2 white papers. First step we did was place 2 whites evenly in center of black paper, then folded up the bottom of the papers all at the same time. (I think the paper was 5x7" and we folded up 3"?) After that, cut two slits in one white paper on the fold to make pop-up…
