A migmatite is a highly metamorphosed rock that has undergone partial melting. The light ‘leucosome’ bands define the melt and are generally comprised largely of quartz and feldspar. The rims at the margins of melt domains rich in Fe-Mg silicates are called ‘melanosomes’. Lastly, the residual unmelted mafic material is called ‘mesosomes’. These darker sections in the rock are often dominated by mafic components such as amphibole, pyroxene and biotite. Art, Nature, Fotos, Fotografia, Sanat, Amazing, Pierre, Natural, Rock

Classification diagram for igneous rocks. Igneous rocks are classified according to the relative abundances of different minerals. A given rock is represented by a vertical line in the diagram. In the ultramafic field, the arrows represent a rock containing 40% olivine and 60% pyroxene. The name an igneous rock gets depends not only on composition, but on whether it is intrusive or extrusive Minerals, Mineralogy, Sedimentary Rocks, Igneous Rock, Igneous, Geology Rocks, Geophysics, Paleontology
