三十三間堂 - Sanjusangen-do, a Buddhist temple in Higashiyama District of Kyoto

- 重文 千体千手観音立像 (じゅうぶん せんたいせんじゅかんのんりゅうぞう) 前後10列の階段状の壇上に整然と並ぶ等身大の1000体の観音立像は圧巻で、堂内は、さながら“仏像の森”、三十三間堂ならではの特徴です。各像は、頭上に十一の顔をつけ、両脇に40手をもつ通形で、中尊同様の造像法で作られています。 千体の中、124体は、お堂が創建された平安期の尊像、その他が、鎌倉期に16年かけて再興された像です。その約500体には作者名が残され、運慶、快慶で有名な慶派をはじめ、院派、円派と呼ばれる当時の造仏に携わる多くの集団が国家的規模で参加したことが伺えます。また、観音像には、必ず会いたい人に似た像があるとも伝えられています。
