Woman's Over-Robe (Uchikake) with Design of Mandarin Oranges and Folded Paper Ornaments, late 18th century. Japan. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Gift of Ilse Bischoff, 1976 (1976.108) | In traditional marriage ceremonies the uchikake is worn over the wedding kimono. Extra padding is inserted into the hem to provide a seamless flow of the train.  | This kimono is on view in "Kimono: A Modern History" through January 19, 2015.
