Anxiety is not our enemy. It is so easy to slip into a cycle where we have anxiety, then have anxiety about having anxiety, have anxiety about that, etc, until our world gets very small. One way to interrupt this pattern is to open up a conversation with your anxiety. What is it really saying? What is the unmet need? If we find a way to validate the need with self-compassion, we can lower anxiety and – with practice – break the cycle. Desire is normal. It’s a deeply human feeling, and it’s emotion which drives our natural processes: You feel hungry = you desire food = you nourish yourself. You feel lonely = you desire connection = you text your friend. However, being a whole, healthy, complex human means allowing desire to exist, honoring it, satisfying it in ways that are accessible and life-giving. In a dialectical approach, the presence of one thought or feeling doesn’t mean that we cannot also validate and affirm a conflicting or opposite thought. DBT and specifically dialectical thinking can help us make space for complexities within the world, our relationships, and within our own internal experience. As illustrated below, Marsha Linehan lectures on how, in dialectical thinking, one color plus the opposite color doesn’t have to equal a color blend- it can create a pattern or tapestry.
