How can we soothe kids and help build resilience to future adversity? By choosing responses to these questions that highlight strengths, identity, and relationships – kind of like this otter mom who (instead of being dismissive or toxically positive), helps her little otter know that they are in a family that will keep them safe and will be there for them even through really hard things. When kids are anxious, it's human nature to want to soothe them. For kids with significant anxiety, however, we may need to monitor ourselves for over-accomodating behaviors. This study at Yale recently compared two group of kids with anxiety disorders. Group 1 got cognitive behavioral therapy and Group 2 didn't get any therapy- but their parents got coaching in how to parent anxious kids. The outcome? Both groups of kids had equivalent improvements in symptoms. Anxiety about what is unknown can make us want to ask lots of questions- and all those questions can put a lot of pressure on a child to relieve *our* anxiety. Sometimes the best way to connect is to scrap the questions and to bring a topic up gently (“I was thinking about you during your recess today.”), Express empathy (“I know some days that’s hard.”), and require nothing.

One key task of educators, parents, and caregivers is helping kids develop the ability to check in with themselves, notice what they are feeling, and express those feelings appropriately. Helping kids develop a robust vocabulary to describe emotions may help them communicate their emotions, which has been linked to improved social support seeking. In other words, kids who can describe what they are feeling can communicate those feelings to peers and adults. Kids with caregivers who give them permission to feel big feelings and that give them support in managing those feelings are kids with tools who are able to become adults who can regulate emotions and find resiliency in the face of crisis. I’ve created a simple visual illustrating how empathic, attuned parenting can disrupt one common cycle behind problem behaviors at home or in the classroom. When someone – especially kids but inclusive of us adults – has a HUGE reaction to a minor thing, the reaction probably is not actually about the thing. More often, it’s fear or trauma rising to the surface, or simply due to a lack of resources to cope in that moment. You can react to the behavior or you can validate it. Validating builds trust, parent-child bonding, and – over time – the capacity within our brains for less reactivity and more self-soothing. During a time of crisis such as this, making meaning together becomes one of the chief tasks of parenting. You don’t have to make it okay. You don’t have to shelter them from all of the scariness. You don’t have to entertain them. You just have to help them know that they are not alone, they are loved, and they are part of a family that will get through this. Ok, ok... but hear me out: Malls, skate parks, movie theaters, diners, and cafes aren't just spaces where generations of teenagers have hung out- they are where we *grew up.* As culture shifts, & *especially* as social contexts have changed in the last year, it's important we leave just a little space for our kids & teens to have some privacy in the space where they are meeting up & growing up: the internet. Compassion Fatigue, Self Compassion, Mental Health And Wellbeing, Mental Health Resources, Free Handwriting, Low Mood, Mood Boost
