The lakefront Florida retreat where FBI agents gunned down gangland legend Ma Barker in 1935 is up for sale - bullet holes and all.

Ma Barker, whose sons Herman, Lloyd, Arthur ("Doc"), and Freddie used her as a cover, said that her boys were driven to crime by poverty. Along with Freddie, she was killed in an  FBI shoot-out near Oklawaha, FL. Fearing a scandal when the public found out his agents had killed someone's mother, J. Edgar Hoover invented the myth of Ma Barker as the evil mastermind of the Barker-Karpis gang, who had led her sons astray. Karpis later said that she had nothing to do with her sons' crimes

On July 1, 1896, the five members of the Rufus Buck Gang were executed. In July 1895, the gang embarked on a 13-day crime spree. Found guilty, they were the only men to hang in Fort Smith for rape. This was, quite possibly, the largest mass execution for rape in U.S. history.

A modest house and barn on a cottonwood shaded hill are home to an Old West legend.
