This giant ice-cream cone looks like it might have been dropped by an oversized child roaming the city of Cologne like a modern-day King Kong, but it is in fact the work of American pop artist Claes Oldenburg and his wife and frequent creative collaborator Coosje van Bruggen. The duo were commissioned to create this whimsical work by the German shopping mall upon which it appears to have landed.
Claes Oldenburg (1929- ) is one of the most popular sculptors alive today. He joined the pop-art movement in the 1960's and has created a series of large-scale sculptures of everyday items like toothpaste, hamburgers and, this apple core. In 1976 Oldenburg began collaborating with the the Dutch artist Coosje van Bruggen (1942-2009).
