Set in Marin County on Tomales Bay, Point Reyes is the small town you want to visit. It's one of my favorite spots in Northern California.
Getting back to easier hiking options that are much closer to San Francisco, the Sausalito-Mill Valley multi-purpose path is minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge and entirely flat and paved. We recommend starting from the end of Sycamore Avenue in Mill Valley and, if you're up for it, going all the way to the Sausalito houseboats (pictured). Here's a map of that route (4.8 miles total), but the path always allows for a lovely stroll in either direction.
