Considering that my direction was extremely limited before the course, I am excited to see where I go from here. This is still a weak point for me, determining what to do next and envision the future. I would like to continue immersing myself with literature pertaining to the creative industries to broaden my view and apply the knowledge to my practice in some form. In a positive way, my direction seems foggy only because of the many roads that lay ahead.
New skills and techniques learned: Critical thinking, reflection, a heightened awareness to a multitude of disciplines attributing to creative insight, time management abilities, enhanced research capabilities, knowledge of effective methodologies for practice, the ability to better contextualise design in its modern and historical form.
How to improve my learning process? I would like to continue at the pace and strategy that I have used up until now, though setting aside a little time everyday to do further reading alongside our project work will be necessary. I need to be further disciplined in order to achieve this.
The ‘Creative Industries - Global Perspectives’ module as a whole inspired me the most. Learning about all the different practices was a can opener of ideas and inspiration for me. I enjoyed the exploration and the knowledge acquired, I think discovering the breadth of possibilities was inspiring. I found myself doing extra research and found a fascination in architecture as well as city design and planning that I would like to continue to explore.
I have learned so much, specialist jargon, design theories and history, debates and a broad view of work done in multiple disciplines. Pre-reading material enabled me to ‘hit the ground running’ once the course started and was beneficial. These materials began to open my eyes to a world of design that I had very little knowledge or experience in. The notion of design being a solution to solving real world problems was somewhat foreign to me.
Weaknesses of my working process were attributed to events and activities outside of work and school. These sometimes put me into a bit of hole that I had to dig myself out of on a number of occasions. Putting in extra time on the weekends and doing school work during my breaks or downtime at work helped strike a balance. These are all sacrifices and challenges that I think we all have experienced and by no means am I exclusive to this.
I think perseverance is a strength of my working process. I was never a great student and the grades showed. I was good enough to get by but this time around, I am curious to see what kind of results I can create if I put in the best effort that I can. I think living in Japan and the work ethic that I have developed over the past few years has helped tremendously, and I think that I would not be able to do this course if it were not for that experience.
Back in semester one module two. I had trouble with ‘the event visit'. The event that I had chosen was so massive in scale it was very difficult to summarise in 900 words. My first draft Robert told me I needed to begin working on an academic style and I found it very difficult to stray away from colloquial language. I recall staying awake for almost two days straight re-planning and rewriting for the activity.
On a scale of difficult to easy I cannot define anything that was easy, so trying to label 'easiest' is too much of a stretch. I enjoy reading and learning about the creative industries including theory and historical developments, I enjoy playing with this knowledge making it applicable to my practice. My honest opinion is if something so far has been easy, that means one did not put in enough effort.
I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every part of the course so far. The building block process builds tangible skills that are fun to explore and develop. I think the reason I have enjoyed every part is the steep learning curve. Everything is fascinating and I want to share everything I have learned with everyone that I know (not everyone I know is as interested as me however). The fact that I can look back and in such a short time see growth is very encouraging.
