8 in heavy cruiser Chikuma, second of the 2 ship Tone class, during the air attacks which sank her at the Battle of Leyte Gulf on 25 October 1944.  Destroyer Nowaki picked up many of her crew, but was herself sunk the next day, leaving only one Chikuma survivor.  This class grouped all their 4 x 8 in turrets forward to increase seaplane carrying capacity aft.
