Hagi castle town. During the Edo Period (1603-1868), Hagi served as the capital of the local daimyo (feudal lords) and prospered as a castle town. While the lord and his family lived in the castle itself, his retainers resided in the nearby samurai quarters of the castle town (Jokamachi). Several lanes, lined by the white walls and wooden gates of former samurai mansions are beautifully preserved in the Jokamachi district of Hagi today.
