When a snow crystal grows slowly, faceting puts three corners on the end of each branch (for example, see the very end of the top branch). With faster growth, branches sprout from each corner. The recipe for this snow crystal is: facet, branch, repeat! Five cycles of this gave the five sets of side-branches you see in the photo.
